An overlooked gem from an unusual version of the Jazz Messengers combo led by drummer Art Blakey – a set that was recorded in Tokyo by a lineup that features a young Carlos Garnett on tenor, doing a mighty fine job of filling in the space that had just be vacated by the great Billy Harper! Garnett's tenor gives the group a spiritual majesty that really points the way towards the territory that Blakey would have the group taking in the early 70s – and the group also features older trumpeter Bill Hardman returning to the Messengers in fine form, next to a young JoAnne Brackeen on piano and Jan Arnet on bass. The tunes include a number of Messengers standards, but nicely updated – in a lineup of tunes that includes "Whisper Not", "It's Only A Paper Moon, "Politely", "Night In Tunisia", and "Blues March" – plus Garnett's tune "What The World Needs Now Is Peace & Love".
