ABBA's fourth studio album, first released October 11, 1976, includes what's considered the group's signature song "Dancing Queen", alongside the big hits "Money, Money, Money" and "Knowing Me, Knowing You". The album was a worldwide success and became the best-selling album of 1977 both in the UK and West Germany and was certified gold in the US.

"Money, Money, Money" was replaced on East German editions with "Bang-A-Boomerang". "Fernando", the smash hit single from earlier in 1976, was added on the album in Australia and New Zealand. Most CD's released 1997 or later include it as a bonus track. The album was first released on CD in 1984.

The copyrighted "backwards B" ABBA logo, designed by Rune Söderqvist, premiered on the album cover. Cover shots were taken at Barkarby airport, north of Stockholm.
