Peter Frampton - Carry The Light (2026) Mp3 / Flac / Hi-Res

Near the beginning of his first record of new material in 16 years, Peter Frampton tears into "Buried Treasure," a big rock production salute to the late Tom Petty's radio show of the same name. It's a headliner on Carry The Light, an album he calls a "need to look back in order to move forward." This homage has a tempo and prominent electric guitar lines that are both obviously reminiscent of Petty and the Heartbreakers at their most memorable. Heartbreaker Benmont Tench guesting on the track further cements the connection. Frampton, who is assisted on this album by son Julian, abruptly switches to a quieter mode for "I'm Sorry Elle," a heartfelt lament to his granddaughter who was born during the COVID-19 pandemic. "I'm sorry Elle/ We let you down/ We're burning up/ We're melting down" he muses with regret, supported by backing vocals from Graham Nash. (Other guests heard on Carry The Light include Sheryl Crow, Bill Evans and H.E.R.)

Frampton has also fashioned the kind of winning number in "I Can't Let It Be" that he's been coming up with since his days in Humble Pie. He rips off guitar solos in this plea for unity where the verses start with an admission: "I don't want to change your thinking/ I can't change the way you see." For those who rightly remember him as a fast fingered, clear-toned electric guitarist, there's the instrumental "Islamorada" where, despite his ongoing struggle with the rare progressive disease Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM), he shows that his fingers still possess their bite and agility. The big production style returns in "Tinderbox," where the 76-year-old urges societal unity, despite its issues: "We all know money is to blame/ Every dollar fans the fire/ Caught in the flames out of desire." Thankfully, he also offers a solution, "We can shine so bright together/ Alone we stand no chance." An old master is still learning new tricks.
