Tom Ward narrates a history series covering the sequence of events in World War I through personal stories and colourised archive footage.
1. Fury
The Great War was supposed to be over by Christmas, but dragged on for four years of stalemate, leaving cities and landscapes devastated, ten million soldiers dead and another 20 million mentally and physically scarred.
2. Fear
Bringing to life the events and personal experiences of the world's first global conflict with the aid of archive footage restored to colour. The Germans rout the Russian Second Army at the battle of Tannenberg in August 1914, halting the invasion of Prussia. After the French seize the opportunity to counterattack at the first Battle of the Marne, four years of trench warfare begin. When the Italians, Ottoman Turks and Bulgarians enter the war and the French and British call upon their colonies for help, the conflict becomes global.
3. Hell
From the trenches in France to the Italian Alps and the Balkans, and beyond to the gates of the east, the whole of Europe is on fire. This is hell on earth.
4. Rage
There's social unrest in Europe and in the trenches as everyone wants an end to war. However, the German high command launches all-out submarine warfare on all foreign ships in the Atlantic, bringing American into the war. The Battle of Passchendaele begins, but the Allied advance is halted by torrential rain.
5. Deliverance
Lenin sets the October Revolution in motion. Germany underestimates the Allied forces. British troops make headway in the Middle East. Peace is achieved in November 1918, but for how long?
